Something Disturbing

Hopefully, that will take you to a video of a news segment. It is disturbing for multiple reasons. I grew up favoring the bad guys in the movies. I thought the villan was the true hero. Imagine it, society is against you and you still have the courage to rebel. I'm not alone in this. Many people admired the bold actions of the 1930s gangsters. I can remember where I was when 2pac was shot as vividly as when I found out about the 9/11 attack in high school and our teacher said it was no big deal. I remembered 2pac and Biggie dying because they were the outlaws, or so they claimed. It was appealing to think that the laws and will of society could be secondary to the desires and needs of the individual. While growing up, I was subjected to a forced sense of inferiority because my classmates came from rich families and got whatever they wanted. I hated them for that but I also despised myself and my situation for not being as lucky as them. The disturbing thing is that a child took all those negative emotions and acted on them to try and become a modern Robin Hood. The even greater problem is that many don't see a problem with this, they just encourage it. I think it all has to do with maturity and awareness. A child that steals planes and boats, runs through the forest barefoot while evading police, and has no remorse should not be encouraged. Yes, it does sound like quite the adventure. However, this is no different than Jackass. While Jackass is entertaining and so are the reports of the illegal activities of the kid, there is a person there. There are victims for these crimes. This isn't just robbing a bank that is insured and stealing from the government. This is stealing from the community for no reason.

Why do we encourage this? The interesting point of the story was that it focused on the child now legally being an adult. This has important sentencing ramifications. However, do you really think this individual will turn himself in peacefully? If he has a gun or any weapon at all, there are serious safety concerns for the police and community. What would stop this from being a hostage situation or another police funeral? He has done a LOT, he could go away for a long time. If he is already looking at a dismal future, why not just do a few things as a last ditch attempt to get away? I don't know what drives someone like him to do that stuff. What I do know is that we need to analyze these situations and think of how they can be avoided in the future
